I bet you're wondering why two completely sane people you thought you knew have turned into gardening freaks.....so are we. ;-)
I've spent some time contemplating this issue, and although it may appear complex, it's really not. The key is, that this is our home. Our own property. Our little piece of land. It's almost double the average California lot at 8100 square feet, although the house is only 900 square feet! That's pretty tiny when you compare it to Bandy Ranch or the farm Robin grew up on, but more than enough for us to try and cultivate while we work full time jobs too. It's the littlest house on the block with the biggest view.
I find that there's nothing so cathartic as taking your anger about a long commute out on some weeds threatening one of your fruit trees. Robin sometimes wants just to escape the keyboard and make something tangible with his hands. So it's therapeutic for us.
We spent many hours this last summer canning and preserving all the wonderful fruits from our garden, juicing some apples to take a stab at fermenting our own cider (We made 8 gallons, woo hoo!), and building a new place to grow more things by our own hands.
I think my favorite part is that we do it together from start to finish. It's nifty to see and eat the wonderful results we've achieved, and we love sharing it with you, our friends and family. It's all made with lots of love.
